The team that represents Canada at the Olympics is known as Canada's National Team, which is typically assembled every four years with the best Canadian hockey team players.
Most of the players are under contract to play in the National Hockey League (the "NHL"), which is an elite professional hockey league comprised of 30 franchises: 7 in Canadian cities and 23 in cities in the USA. The Montreal Canadiens are 1 of the 7 Canadian based NHL teams (their players are from all over the world).
The National Team concept is similar in structure to teams that qualify for the World Cup (soccer / football). While the players are under contract to play in various football leagues, they represent their home country at the World Cup (Christiano Ronaldo plays for Real Madrid and for the Portuguese National Team).
