For a time of the year where the stadium would generally be empty, it's a great success. It is not designed to be a major bowl game, as all the BCS games are played at much larger stadiums, but it gets attendance.
With an eight year extension of the contest (With the ACC and Big 10 replacing the former Big East and Big 12), it is a sign that this event will continue to take place.
The biggest detractors to the Pinstripe Bowl, however, are hockey fans who would like to see the Winter Classic played at Yankee Stadium. Such a game would draw a capacity crowd and charge significantly more for tickets. However, current NHL rules require the stadium to be in the league's control in the week leading up to the game, which can't happen if there's a football game being played there. The NHL will have the New York Rangers play two games at Yankee Stadium in January, 2014, as part of their expansion of outdoor games from 1-2 contests per season to six.
