It's hard for me to believe he wouldn't be as dominant today as he was back then, maybe even more so. He redefined the position of defenseman, showing that defenseman could skate fluidly , do end to end rushes and be a part of the power play and offense without sacrificing defense. At least, they could if they had Bobby Orr's skating ability and talent!! In truth, he was a freak athlete who could do what he did while still boozing it up on his downtime and without the strict workout and diet regimes they have today. With all due respect to Gretzky, I think Orr is the greatest NHL player who ever lived because , as I said above, he changed the way the game is played.
Perhaps the most incredible stat, in a career full of them, is this. In 1970-1971 season, Bobby Orr had a plus /minus rating of +124. He was on the ice for 124 more goals scored by his team than goals allowed. As a defenseman!! That is the all time NHL record by a wide margin. It will likely never be broken.
Orr did all this while getting into constant fights and scrapes as a player, something that today's superstars in the NHL rarely if ever have to worry about.
By the way, I am not a Bruins fan by any means. And I never really saw Orr play except at the virtual end of his career. Nevertheless, I am quite comfortable in saying that Bobby Orr would be an NHL superstar were he playing in today's league.
