What are the jersey numbers of famous soccer players?

First I would like to give a little history on how numbers were actually given, The best would be the OLD classic formation of 2-3-5 (yes , 2 defenders)
where to buy cheap jerseys
(Turned out alittle bigger than i expected.)

This gives us the basic numbering of players
1        Goalie
2 & 3 Fullbacks
4-6    Midfielders
7-11   Forwards (Wingers being 7 & 11, Striker 9 and Playmaker 10)

As these are conventional ones you also get the Netherlands numbering by alphabetical order as well.

"Soccer shirt number, position, meaning, famous" This link gives the newer  and more robust meaning to each number and where traditionally the numbers would play.
extract from it as to numbers that have been retired (ie never to be used again)
"Retired jersey numbers
You may have come across the term “retired jersey number”. In football, like in other sports, a retired jersey number is one which can no longer be used by other players of the same squad.Numbers are retired to honor a player who has given significant contributions to a club or national team.
Below are some retired jersey numbers:
#3 of Milan – for Paolo Maldini, the greatest player of AC Milan
#6 of Milan – for Franco Baresi, one of the finest defenders in football history
#6 of Roma – for Aldair, one of the best Brazilian fullbacks
#6 of West Ham United – for Bobby Moore, one of England’s greatest footballers
#10 of Brescia – for Roberto Baggio, the best Italian footballer ever
#10 of Kispest AC/Honvéd – for Ferench Puskas, considered as the best Hungarian players of all time
#10 of Napoli – for Diego Maradona, who gave lifted them from one of the poorest to the best club in Serie A
#14 of Ajax – for Johan Cruijff, considered as Netherland’s best ever player
#23 of Manchester City – for Marc-Vivien Foe, City player who died while playing for his country Cameroon

Jersey number retired for fans
In football, the fans are dubbed the 12th player because their support is equal to having an additional player on the field. Some football clubs that received strong support from fans retire the number 12 jersey to honor them. Thus, Fenerbahce, RC Lens, Bayern Munich, Feyenoord, Portsmouth, Dynamo Kiev, Lazio or Zenith St. Petersburg are some of the clubs where the number 12 has been permanently withdrawn to pay tribute to the loyalty of supporters."

ps. #12 serving as the +1 after the 11 players on the field in case you were confused. Rugby uses the Player 23 as the fan due to their inclusion of the entire squad first.

As to numbers that are famous, I'll skip (unless requested) the normal numbers and rather go to players that have unusual numbers.

  1. AC Milan - 3 players decided that normal numbers are too mainstream, as well as the just the size of the squad the Rossoneri possessed, they decide that their shirt number will be their date of birth:
  • Andriy Shevchenko (76)
  • Ronaldinho (80), Same as his Fifa 15 rating.
  • Mathieu Flamini (84)

2.  Dani Alves - The man famous for playing with team mates numbers that have left. e.g.

  • 22 - The shirt of Eric Abidal a former team mate in Barcelona, whom he had even offered part of his liver to.
  • 6 - The shirt of Xavi Hernandez (the legend), He said he would wear this shirt as tribute to Xavi and to keep his legacy alive.
3. Ivan Zamorano #(1+8)- He wore a rather ordinary looking 18 due to the arrival of the masterful Ronaldo(the Brazilian striker) taking his number 9. This however was made a quite hilarious affair as he decided that he liked 9 so much that he put a small + in between the 1 and the 8.

4. Bixente Lizarazu - #69 - Though referred to as a commonly lewd number due to certain connotations, Lizarazu actually chose it due to a range of rather coincidental measurements, he was born in 1969, weighed 69kg and had a height of 1.69 metres. Hence the choice of the number.
